India defeated Sri Lanka by 165 runs at the Galle International Stadium after setting a target of 372 and bowling the hosts out for 206 in their second innings.

The 1st Test between Sri Lanka and India on the 2026 tour took place at Galle International Stadium, yielding final match scores across four innings of 462 and 193 for India, alongside Sri Lanka's 284 and 206.

Devdutt Padikkal came into the side at No. 3 and compiled a commanding 167 off 230 balls featuring 15 fours and one six. Padikkal entered the XI as a replacement for Sai after averaging 60.33 in the 2025-26 Ranji Trophy season, watched on by chief selector Ajit Agarkar.

Padikkal scored 167 runs off 230 balls in the first innings and added 44 runs off 75 balls with six fours in the second innings. He partnered KL Rahul, who hit 82 off 175, for a 150-run stand in the first innings, before Dhruv Jurel added a brisk 51 off 68 balls down the order.

Manav Suthar took 10 wickets in the match, including a second-innings five-wicket haul to seal victory. Suthar claimed his second five-wicket haul in just two Tests, wrapping up the match by bowling Keshara Nuwantha for 20.

Suthar struck with his very first ball in Sri Lanka's 1st innings to dismiss Dinesh Chandimal, and later took two wickets in two balls, dismissing Sonal Dinusha and Dunith Wellalage's teammate Jayasuriya in the 4th innings.

Sonal Dinusha stood tall amid Sri Lanka's top-order collapses with a maiden Test century in the first innings and 84 in the second. Dinusha scored 100 off 168 balls with four fours and two sixes in the first innings to lift Sri Lanka from 59/4, and followed up with 84 off 128 balls featuring eight fours and one six in the fourth innings.

Dinusha combined with wicketkeeper Niroshan Dickwella, who made 80 off 115, for a 146-run partnership for the 5th wicket, helping Sri Lanka reach 284 and avoid the follow-on.

Rishabh Pant attacked in India's second innings with 66 off 69 balls, bringing up his 20th Test fifty and becoming the 4th batter in Test cricket history to hit 100 sixes.

Pant hit his 100th career Test six off Lahiru Kumara at 36.4 overs to reach his 20th Test fifty, finishing his second innings on 66 off 69 balls with eight fours and two sixes.

Ravindra Jadeja claimed his 350th Test wicket during Sri Lanka's first innings, while debutant Keshara Nuwantha made an instant impression.

Jadeja reached 350 Test wickets when Keshara Nuwantha was caught by Shubman Gill at cover off silly point's knee in the 67th over of Sri Lanka's 1st innings. Debutant Keshara Nuwantha dismissed Rishabh Pant as his maiden Test wicket and went on to claim KL Rahul, Ravindra Jadeja, and Devdutt Padikkal across the match.

Despite a 95-run resistance between Dhananjaya de Silva, who scored 59, and Sonal Dinusha with his 84, Sri Lanka lost their last 5 wickets rapidly against Krishna and Suthar.

Sri Lanka slipped to 21/3 in pursuit of 372 before captain DDS and Dinusha counter-attacked. Pasindu Sooriyabandara entered the match in the fourth innings as a concussion substitute and was dismissed for a golden duck by Suthar.
